Publication of the Hamilton Report: 25 recommendations for economic crime reform
On 3 December 2020, the Department of Justice published the much anticipated report into the ‘Structures and Strategies to Prevent, Investigate and Penalise Economic Crime and Corruption' (the Report). The Review Group was chaired by Mr James Hamilton, former Director of Public Prosecutions, and was made up of representatives from the leading State bodies responsible for the prevention, investigation and prosecution of economic crimes and corruption.
At the launch of the Report, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee TD commented that 'corruption and ‘white-collar crime’ damages our economy, breeds cynicism in our society and is a threat to our international reputation'. In this article, we examine the 25 recommendations made by the Review Group that are intended to meet the legislative, resourcing and structural challenges of investigating and prosecuting economic crimes in Ireland.
