The EU Digital Product Passport: the future of free movement of goods and a sustainable Europe
Improving transparency on the environmental impact of products, and empowering consumers to make sustainable choices, is a key objective of the European Commission. A significant initiative which will assist in driving this objective is the proposed introduction of Digital Product Passports (DPPs). These will be affixed to products and will provide information about a product's sustainability profile throughout the supply chain cycle.
DPPs will be rolled out under the new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). The ESPR is expected to be adopted in the first quarter of 2024, to be followed by sector specific legislation for up to 30 different product categories over the next number of years.
In this publication, we consider the details of the DPP and offer practical considerations for businesses in preparing for the DPP.
